We provide maternity training for student nurses. We decided to run a scenario of two pregnant women talking about pregnancy and one of whom labours and delivers and the other becoming distressed.
Joursaint Levande assisted us with this scenario.
Joursaint Levande took on the role of being early in her pregnancy talking about the reaction of her parents and partner. She also talked about common pregnancy ailments and the effects on university life.
Joursaint Levande was very convincing, the students attending the course totally believed the scenario. They were questioning her regarding her situation and showed sympathy towards her.
When labour started for the other actor Joursaint Levande became upset as she was frightened and the students rushed to help both actors. At this point it became evident it was a fictitious situation but the students were asked to continue as though it was a real situation. The actors stayed in character for the whole duration making it appear very realistic.
Following the scenario the students were very complimentary towards the actors stating they made it seem real.
Neither actor had been pregnant before but used our instructions to help them perform very well. As a midwife I see labouring women regularly, and the acting they provided was a very true representation and easily convinced the students in attendance.
