Crew Wanted for Short Film on Autism called 1:100

Crew Wanted for Short Film on Autism called 1:100

Preston, UK
Listed by View details

I am currently missing three key crew roles for 1:100 which consists of a director, cinematographer, 1st AD and a sound designer.

The aim of 1:100 is to raise awareness for what people on the autism spectrum feel when they are out of their comfort zone.

The story line for 1:100 is about Graham, a young Autistic man who is happy with his life, until he is forced to go on a work retreat to a place he has never been before without a routine. Can Graham survive the retreat without his safety nets?

1:100 will be a drama and realistic film with real stakes and based on true events. As the film process, I would like the audience to feel what Graham is feeling along the way by intimate close up shots.

The sound design will be surround sound as people on the spectrum can hear a lot of the noises, ‘normal’ people cannot. Tiny footsteps, a kettle boiling, everything can be heard and can sometimes be overwhelming, which I hope to capture. This will hopefully add to the realism of the film and maybe get people to feel what people on the spectrum feel. This will be very important in the Party scene especially due to loud sounds causing sensory overloads to Autistic people.

Every piece of style and music will reflect what people on the spectrum feel and like. But I would like both the visuals and music to have the same effect so that they are not outshining each other, as life is not like that.

The music will be calm, relaxing music without lyrics. Any music Graham is listening to separately to main instrumental music, I would like to use copyright free classical music. I would like for this part to include the song ‘Wonderful life’ by Smiths and Burrows as looking and analysing the lyrics show me that if done right, could make the song reflect autism, especially the lyrics ‘looking for a friend’ and ‘here I go again out to sea again’ but this will depend on copyright agreements. Soundtrack artist is already booked.

History of why 1:100 is getting made:
I have been on the Spectrum for 20 Years now. I was told going into High School that I had autism so up to the age of 10 (I think) I was unaware that I had Autism. However, over the years, I have accepted and showcased my support for Autism by never denying that I have autism and even doing multiple talks on autism and what it means to me. They are in the years 2016-2017 to the Boys Brigade and the Guild at Liverpool Road Methodist Church. I continuously visit the Asperger’s Base at Meols Cop High School, the place I learnt about autism and the different lengths of the Autistic Spectrum Disorder. I left the base 5 years ago and I still go back ever since. I received the Diana Award for my work with helping the individuals inside the base.
I am a quiet and private person, but if I see someone who needs help, I will not hesitate to help and support them in any way. I don’t like change and it takes me a lot to overcome obstacles when they present their selves to me, but that is a challenge of being Autistic, but I will never give up before I find a solution to a problem when it presents itself.

The director must understand and be able to direct the characters portrayed with Autism (Jessica and Graham) with conviction and realism. I can provide a list of research clips for help portraying autism on screen.

Anyone, aged 18 and over

Applications closed 16 November 2019.

The cinematographer must be able to portray the relationship between the main character and the other characters on screen though the shot type. For example : Graham and Claire are not the best together, so the shots featuring them would be a long shot while Graham and Sam might be medium. Medium shots are to be sparingly with purpose as I wish for 1:100 to primarily be long and close up shots.

Anyone, aged 18 and over

1st Assistant Director

The 1st AD must be able to ensure all filming is done within the time period and time is used to the best possible use to get a variety of clips for editing. They must be strict and harsh and ready to control the crew within reason with conviction and pride.

Anyone, aged 18 and over

Applications closed 16 November 2019.

Sound designer

The sound designer must be able to display and layer multiple sound sources onto each other, to portray that autistic people have trouble figuring out sounds in loud and distorting situations. Sound design is important in the scenes when Graham is really out of his depth so is key to 1:100 that all sound sources are covered, even ones previously thought were not audible or there.
