Victoria, Australia

First Night | Suhaagraat | 12 min Short Film| Single Scene | Drama

A Gujarati couple on their wedding night - Sharmilla is raised in Australia and Dayashanker is a recent migrant to Australia. Both are in their 40’s, both shy, both virgins.

How do they overcome their timidity to consummate their marriage to please their overbearing family and perform their duty? Do they follow tradition, or do they make their own?

First Night is written and directed by Dimple Rajyaguru and produced by Mimo Mukii. We are both emerging independent filmmakers based in Melbourne, with short films that have screened at film festivals, nationally and internationally. This student film will also be the pilot episode of an anthology web series.

All body shapes, height, complexions, and people with disabilities and LGBTQIA+ are encouraged to apply.

Intimacy: We want to suggest intimacy without showing it on screen because it's not in line with the story or it's characters. e.g. laying in the bed next to the other actor, hugging, and holding hands and suggestion of a kiss without any physical kiss. Actors will be fully clothed. It's important our actors feel safe so we'll take into account what they're comfortable with.
