Actors Wanted for Short Play-Reading | Midsumma

Victoria, Australia

We are looking for FOUR TALENTED ACTORS for a play-reading in February.

This year, Melbourne's Midsumma Arts Festival asked for submissions of a 10-15 minute excerpt from a new play for their annual Queer Playwriting Awards. This year, I have been fortunate enough to have what I wrote shortlisted for this prestigious award.

This means I now have to perform the 10-15 minute, as a play-reading, in front of a panel of judges in February. Only eight works will be performed for the judges. The panel will select four to be performed live in front of an audience at Gasworks Arts Park in April.

If I win, the play then receives full production funding to be turned into a fully realised work during the following year's festival.

So, right now, I am looking for FOUR TALENTED ACTORS for just the play-reading for the judges in February, then if we're successful the play-reading in front of a live festival audience in April. And if we win you'll be guaranteed a paid role in the play! But for now, the task is to perform the best damn version of my work that we possibly can.

The play is called THAT'S RACIST and is a fast-paced comedy dealing with casual racism in Australian society and culture.

Audition / Rehearsal / Production dates

Auditions to be done via Zoom, rehearsals at a Studio in Southbank in December/January.

Job payment

Fixed price of $100 - $100 per play-reading. Defiantly one, two if we're selected by the judges.

THOMAS

Thomas is one of two main characters. He is an openly-gay, Australian man who works at the local pool as casual job. He is highly-educated and sees his job as menial and beneath him. He is sarcastic and single. Importantly, he considers himself as 'not racist' and vigorously stands up for liberal causes, but Thomas thinks society goes too far when calling out casual racism which is not meant to be hurtful or demeaning. This job involves reading the script, in character, as a play-reading.

Male, aged 18 to 30

GREG

He has dealt with institutional and casual racism all his life, and enjoys being right about issues and pushing peoples buttons. This job involves reading the script, in character, as a play-reading.
