‘My Friend Simon’ (2021) Is a drama focusing on men's mental health and the aspects of it that are not talked about.

Synopsis: Battling with mental health issues and surrounded by people who just don’t seem to understand him, Music student Charlie is close to giving up, until he meets Simon who guides him on the path to recovery.

Genre: Drama

NOTE: This project will be unpaid but we can pay for travel expenses. All acting talents will also be provided with a copy of the film.

This project is a mixture of both Student filmmakers and Independent Filmmakers, looking to create a professional short film.

All crew have passed their Screenskills module on COVID Awareness for Production Training.

Character Profiles:

Charlie - Male -
Aged 21 - 26:
(Principal Role)

Music is a passion of Charlie's and is also what he is studying at university. However Charlie’s mental health is declining. Struggling with both anxiety and depression, Charlie is finding it very hard to deal with his degree, family problems, relationship problems and more. Charlie is on a desperate search to be understood but cannot help but feel like he is alone with his problems.

Joan - Female -
Aged 37 - 58:
(Supporting Role)

Joan is Charlie’s Mother, however she seems to not have an understanding of any of the problems that Charlie is going through, usually responds to Charlie in a way which seemingly affects what's going on with him mentally.

Wayne - Male -
Aged 37 - 58
(Supporting Role)

Wayne is Charlie’s dad, Wayne tries to be understanding about the problems that Charlie is facing. Understands aspects of what Charlie is going through, but Wayne's sarcastic approach to things is slowly having a detrimental effect on his son's wellbeing.

Simon - Male -
Aged 20 - 30:
(Supporting Role)
Simon seems to be the only one who fully understands Charlie by representing his rational thoughts by keeping Charlie aware of the positive aspects in his own life. Becoming a role model for Charlie's guidance.

Marcus - Male -
Aged 21 - 28:
(Supporting Role)
Marcus is not patient with Charlie and doesn't seem to understand why he behaves in the way he does. Marcus tends to see Charlie as someone who's only part of the group, making him come across as ignorant.

Eric - Male -
Aged 21 - 26:
(Supporting Role)

Eric is not aware of what Charlie is going through however he wants to help him and is the only one in the friendship group who shows interest in trying to understand him.

Hayley - Female -
Aged 21 - 28:
(Supporting Role)

Hayley is Charlie’s girlfriend and is supportive of him, however she does not know all of the struggles within Charlie's life, despite trying to get to know all of what's going on. Throughout the film, Hayley comes across as both supportive and caring. This helps Charlie progress in having a better relationship with Joan.
