Web-Series Crew Call: LGBT Sci-Fi
My name is Britta, I am a cinematographer with eight years experience in the camera, lighting, sound, and editing departments. I am also non-binary and polyamorous and am sick of never seeing these parts of my identity represented on screen. So I am looking to find collaborators interested in creating a web series together.
I will be providing camera, lighting, and audio equipment, but beyond that don’t have a budget. This is unpaid but if season one goes well and there is interest in a season two we will launch a crowd funding campaign to gather interest.
I am looking for filmmakers, mostly actors with some screen experience or interest in on screen experience. Also crew members; while most of my set experience in behind the camera I am also happy to do sound recording if someone wants to DoP, and we can switch crew roles throughout the series on an episode-by-episode basis. I am interested in up-skilling queer filmmakers and I am interested in collaborating with queer folk, trans people, bi and pan people, people of colour, and others who have interest in filmmaking both in front of and behind the camera.
The plot is currently a very loose concept as a starting point. I would be interested in meeting up for a few pre production meetings and as a group creating the season one plot outline together. This is why I don’t have fully set characters yet, I am interested in hearing what the actors and the rest of the group want to bring to the production.
Plot: Two siblings living in the near future (~2027) have, through controversial biohacking technology, gotten audio transmittable cochlear implants so they can talk to each other remotely. They keep this a secret from their friends for the first two episode until some unknown person hacks into their feed and begins sending them unwanted audio input (what kind of audio? Taunting/harassment? Government secrets? Spoilers from their favourite TV show? The entire Sherlock Holmes audio books on loop? Conspiracy secrets from the biohacking company that begin to sound more and more plausible?). The rest of the season is the siblings and their friends playing detective and finding out who is hacking their feed. Obviously there will be a second story arch running simultaneously alongside this one, which will be introduced in episode one.
I’m interested in ideas as to what the second story arch should be. But what I would very much like it to not be is: Someone coming out as gay, queer, bi, or trans (I have seen a million coming out stories, I am interested in people’s lives afterwards); someone being bullied or harassed for being gay, queer, bi, or trans (this might happen once or twice in the series but I don’t want to focus an entire story arch on this. I see enough of it in my everyday life. This is fiction and escapism and I’m interested in what life can look like beyond fighting for our rights); any plot line that uses a character’s polyamorous relationships as a drama point (I want to portray polyamory the way I’ve seen it and lived it, chill, normal, kinda boring sometimes, not a point of contention or drama.)
Each episode will be 5 to 10 minutes long. Season one should be around ten episodes long, this will give the audience enough time to get to know the characters, but we as filmmakers wont be biting off more than we can chew in terms of production time.
?I would like to meet some weekends in March and April for plot development and later rehearsals, and if we get enough interest and people on board filming should start in May. Wrap date depends on availability, a lot of this will probably be filmed over weekends and perhaps evenings, so keep that in mind.
