Started photography at the age of 10 with a Box Brownie
Started cinematography at the age of 13 with a Minolta Std 8
Have worked with the following Still formats:-
620, 120, 127, Rapid, 126, 135, 935, 110, ½ frame 35mm, Minox 16mm, APS, Digital & full frame digital.
And the following Cine formats:-
Standard 8, Super 8, Super 8 sound, 16mm, super 16, 35mm.
And the following Video formats:-
VHS, Betacam, Betacam SP, DigiBeta, Video 8, Hi 8, DV, DVCAM, DVCPRO,HDV, HDCAM. 1966 I joined the Dunedin Camera Club. 1968 I joined Kings High Camera Club and the following year was running the club till 1970.
1970 I joined the Longburn College Camera Club and Cine Club til 1972, including tutoring on photography.
In 1972 i started as a part-time medical photographer at the University of Otago medical school assisting Dr Roland Tan
1973 I joined NZBC (DNTV2) as trainee Camera Operator, first working in studios, then OB crew. During these two years i was also submitting my work to the Otago Daily Times as a freelance cameraman
!975 I moved to USA working for Chris Wood Productions (in LA then NY) as Cameraman working on documentaries in which we were contracted to EB Educational, Learning Channel, Discovery, NatGeo Stock, and Bateman Learning Systems.
During my time working with Chris, we travelled and shot doccos in the Americas and many parts of South East Asia.
After 2 years of self travel I returned to NZ in 1989.
Since 1989 I have worked in many different departments in the film and media industry including:-
Locations, Unit, Transport, Catering, Lighting, Grips, Sound, Art & Production.
And the following positions:-
Swing Driver, Truck Driver, Bus Driver, Stunt Driver, Security, Catering assist, Locations Scout, Locations assist, Unit assist, Unit Manager, Wardrobe assist, Greens assist, Art dept runner, Grip assist, Lighting assist, Gaffer, Genie Operator, Production Runner, Production assist, Production Co-Ordinator, Production Manager, Production Development, Script Development, Safety Officer, 1st Aid Medic, Extra, Featured Extra, Support Cast, Stunts, Stills Photographer, Vid Split, Camera Assist, Cameraman, DOP, Assistant Editor, 3rd AD, 1st AD, Casting, Director, & Producer.
But along these years the most common job i would fall back on is my skills as a still photographer, often shooting portfolios and training new talent for the film and television industry, and creating adverts for either press or web productions.
